As a San Diego native, people can say that Janell did not stray far from home. Yet, as the saying goes, “when you know what you like, you stick with it”. Janell grew up in San Diego, first attended Brigham Young University – Idaho, and graduated with a B.S. in Early Childhood Development/Special Education. After taking a year off, she went back to school: This time for a second B.S. at University of Nebraska at Omaha to major in Speech Language Pathology. Janell took a gap year before attending Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in Provo, Utah. She interned at two local Utah elementary schools, a Vent/Trach Skilled Nursing Facility, and a private practice in San Marcos, CA.
Janell had done treatment sessions in person and online (teletherapy). She had incorporated games into therapy and created therapy activities into games. Janell primarily works with pediatrics with articulation, language, and AAC. Her core belief comes from the idea that for children, play is work! So to target goals for speech therapy, make it fun and playful.
Janell admits she is a Disney fan, an enjoyer of DreamWorks Animation, and a dog lover. She may have a few Golden Books of Ghostbusters, Jungle Cruise, Betty White, and Dungeons and Dragons. As a member of the Hufflepuff house, she feels the need to include all members of all fandoms, no matter how different people may be from her. Big or small, green with pointy ears or always carrying a sword and shield, Janell embraces geeks and nerds and enjoys incorporating ‘random’ things into her therapy!
As an elementary school student, Janell stated she wanted to become a speech language pathologist to her SLP (just not in those exact words). In high school, the concept of a peaceful area to have therapy took root. While thinking about a peaceful place to have speech therapy, Janell came up with the idea of a lake house for therapy or an office by a lake. Finally, she decided that that being at a lake was just a state of mind, which created the idea of therapy “at the lake”.
At The Lake Therapy currently is working on contracting with a few insurance companies. At this current time, Janell is only accepting Private Pay clients.
